What happens next? is the most crucial question a content creator can ask themselves, and if you aren’t asking this question several times each day or even several times each hour, you are probably missing out!
You write a substack note and ask yourself, “What happens next?”
What does someone who reads that note do next?
If you want them to check out your latest newsletter, is it clear that’s what you want them to do?
If it’s to read more of your content or subscribe… tell them.
Let’s say you are setting up a landing page, what do you want someone to do?
Fill in their email address?
Is it clear that what they should do next?
Tell them!
When I use this exercise with my coaching clients, it’s often like watching a light come on; they go from having a “sort of” idea of what they want to create to being hyper-focused on creating a profitable path for their audience.
That question isn’t particularly powerful on its own, but when asked every step of the way, it becomes very powerful.
Your content has a clear purpose, your landing pages have a clear call to action, your emails or newsletters give the reader a singular task, and everything you do connects.
So, What Happens Next?
Go read this page where I explain about the Growth Hub I am adding for my subscribers.
See, it’s easy! 🤡
What’s Your Daily Routine?
A couple of days ago, I posted my daily routine.. (the note bombed!) I’ve adopted a 3-hour work routine of either 3 hours straight or 2 X1.5 hour sessions interrupted by a walk into town and a coffee.
When I wrote that, I didn’t say that I have become hyper-productive since adopting my three-hour-a-day routine. I get more done in those three hours than if I worked 9-5.
As a content marketer, you should be able to complete everything you need to in three hours or less.
Today, I am two hours into my routine, and I have created content for Thursday and Friday because this weekend is my 40th-anniversary wedding, and I’ll be away. Having a routine gives you freedom
Two articles, this newsletter, and the sales page for the upcoming Growth hub, the final task will be a video.
Three hours of focused work with no distractions can and will help you create all the content you need to grow your online business.
Try It
Right, I’m off to drink champagne and eat strawberries… or, in reality, probably watch some TV and read a good book!
This simple question forces us to think about the user experience at every point and ensures we're guiding our readers or followers in the right direction.
Whether it’s subscribing, reading more, or taking action, clear calls to actions keep everything purposeful.
