Earlier this week I got an email from a subscriber and he asked me this:
"Mark, where do you draw the line between what you give away and what you sell?"
It’s a good question and it’s one that a lot of creators struggle with, I struggled with it myself for a long time in the past.
So if you’ve ever worried about giving away too much for free, you’re not alone. It’s understandable that you want to monetise your knowledge.
But that’s the old-school marketing mindset…. AI exists, and YouTube is full of videos that can provide the answers you’re holding back.
There was a time when we were told:
Don’t move the free line
Keep your best stuff locked away
Never teach in public
Guys like Matt Furey and Ben Settle built entire empires on that idea. I read them. I respected them. I even used some of their approaches.
But here’s the thing…Do you know anyone who actually likes “blind copy”?
I followed their guidance, but it never really sat right with me. It was what we were told worked, so we all did it.
Looking back it sucked, and I regret every day I spent being secretive, because I love teaching. I like helping. And I love getting feedback
I’ve always believed that trust leads to sales, not secrecy.
Eventually, I stopped hiding everything. I started writing more and sharing more. Teaching more.
And here’s what happened:
The more I shared, the more people wanted to buy.
Because what I sell isn’t information.
Its implementation.
Most people don’t need more knowledge. They need a clear path. A simple system. A way to take action without getting overwhelmed or second-guessing every step.
They want to see how I use my own methods in real time, in real life. That’s what they pay for.
It’s not the what. It’s the how. And more importantly… it’s the who.
The internet is full of free ideas. But what your audience wants is you , your voice, your process, your experience, your way of simplifying things.
There’s no secret sauce. (Literally!!!)
(No idea why I added that, it seemed like a good idea at the time!)
Everything we teach is available in thousands of places.
The way you explain it?
The way you use it?
The way you get it working day by day?
That’s yours, that’s your unique secret sauce.
And if you’re building an audience, that will be your edge too.
So don’t stress about giving away too much. Focus on being useful. Clear. Consistent.
Because when people see what you know, and they trust how you teach… They’ll want to go deeper with you.
And that’s when the sale happens and you get emails like this….

Beautiful post, Mark! Seth Godin would be proud!
This is exactly what I’ve been trying to do. Your system is unique. The info inside is not. Great read!
