The average person is bombarded with content all their waking hours. When I was starting out, the amount of content I saw daily was minuscule compared to now.
I probably read a newspaper on the train to work. I watched the news a few times a week …if I caught it.
Back then, the news was a 30-minute program three times a day: 1 pm, 6 pm and 9 pm. I could come to my own opinions without being told what to think and do all day, every day.
Bliss!
Now, there is a barrage of content 24 hours a day, and as a content creator, you have to compete or become irrelevant.
How to Stand Out
To stand out, you have to be different. You must become a storyteller and learn to present the lessons in every story you tell.
In a world where everyone is preaching and selling, making your content personal helps you stand out.
Some of my most successful content has involved using a personal story to present a lesson.
When I accidentally paid €500 for a fish meal, I used it as a lesson about presenting offers and sold a mastermind on the topic.
I sold a course about writing emails that convert by telling my subscribers what it was like selling doughnuts on a nudist beach.
When every other marketer was in their inbox selling, I was there talking about fish and dicks!
Guess who made more sales?
Stories Are All Around You
The skill here isn’t storytelling—anyone who has read a book or watched a film can work out how it’s done—but recognising what makes a good story.
You must aim to create content that Entertains, Informs, and Educates. In short, “Infotainment.”
Going to a shop and finding the last avocado could be the basis of a story. (Lesson: Don’t Miss Out On This fantastic offer, which ends in 6 hours)
To get here, start by writing the call to action you’ll use at the end of the content.
Next, add a story, and finally, you get to the fun part of linking the story to the call to action. I call this the transition.
Finally, tweak the content, and you are good to go.
If you’ve done the transition right your content will stand out and get the results you want.
Have a great Week!
